Sources & methodology

01

Reference markets

The desk identifies the provider, currency, published unit, and observation date for 10 monthly World Bank benchmarks. Non-USD values are indicative ECB reference-rate conversions; the World Bank metal observation month can differ from the ECB FX date. These references provide context—not a scrap valuation or an offer from SFM.

02

Linked industry reporting

The wire surfaces current coverage from selected official feeds and optional GDELT discovery. Original publishers remain visible and clickable so readers can inspect the underlying reporting.

03

SFM editorial work

Trade Notes are original 200–500 word articles published as complete pieces. Automated drafts enter review first; they are not silently posted as finished advice.

Materials index

Broad catalog. Narrow pricing claims.

The 110-entry index covers commercially relevant elements, mineral commodities, alloys, grades, and processed materials. Only 10 World Bank series receive direct public benchmark values, displayed in each series' own unit. Materials without a public benchmark are quote-only or may show a clearly identified related-input benchmark for context.

SFM never calculates an alloy price from its constituent-metal prices. A related-input benchmark is not the material's value, an SFM bid, or a settlement instruction.

  • Catalog presence does not confirm that SFM accepts every material, chemistry, form, or condition.
  • Actual lot evaluation depends on verified chemistry, form, condition, contamination, quantity, location, recovery route, and commercial terms.
  • Any regulated or hazardous material requires prior disclosure and written eligibility confirmation.
  • No paid market-data API is required for the current 10-series pilot.

A Ground News-inspired principle

Compare coverage without inventing a score.

Political left/center/right labels are a poor proxy for expertise in international metals and logistics. Unless SFM licenses a qualified ratings dataset, the desk identifies source role and geography instead of inventing a neutrality score.

  1. 01
    Role

Official source, exchange or market operator, trade publication, business press, regional reporting, company release, or independent analysis.

  2. 02
    Geography

The countries and operating regions represented in the coverage.

  3. 03
    Provenance

The publisher, publication time, original link, and available primary document remain visible.

  4. 04
    Review

A headline is a discovery signal. Readers should distinguish reported facts from forecasts, interpretation, and unresolved claims.

Automation and review

The wire discovers. Editors make the call.

The homepage wire draws limited headline metadata from selected official feeds and adds GDELT discovery when its public index is available. Every displayed item retains a direct, visible publisher link. Topic and material labels identify explicit headline terms; they do not verify the article body or show that news caused a price change. The wire does not reproduce article bodies or publisher images.

Once a week, an automated workflow prepares a 200–500 word draft on the most important topic from the previous seven days. A person reviews its sources, claims, and wording before publication. If a feed fails, the site labels the condition rather than substituting fabricated prices or headlines.

Corrections and limits

Make uncertainty visible.

The metal series updates monthly, the World Bank metal observation month can differ from the ECB FX date, and upstream feeds can be temporarily unavailable. Non-USD values are indicative ECB reference-rate conversions. External reports can also change as events develop. SFM labels cached or unavailable information, does not represent a benchmark as a bid, and links readers to publishers for the underlying reporting.

  • Corrections update the affected page and its source link where practical.
  • News summaries do not replace the original publisher’s work.
  • Publisher images and article bodies are not reused without rights.
  • Questions or correction requests can be sent through the contact page.
